Q Whisky & Wine Bar (often referred to simply as Q Bar) is a small, very local Shanghai gay bar off the beaten track of the gayborhood, in Tianzifang (close to gate 4).  In the traditional style of international neighborhood bar, its entrance is low key, just a black wall, with the black frosted glass door and tiny sign “Q whisky&wine” (see photo below for location of door).

The Q Bar is focussed on both wine and single malt whisky, yet of course has a full array of anything and everything on offer from champagne to shots to cocktails to martini’s, and unlike 99% of other gay bars, prepared by an actual professional bartender.  The owner is a long time Shanghai icon of the gay scene.

The Q Bar reminds me very much of a typical local neighborhood bar in Manhattan, New York, that has a regular clientele that either live locally, or, enjoy the professional, quiet and cost nature of the bar, and choose it as a destination for the evening.

The interior is simple, wing back chairs with small seating areas, combined with the focus of the bar items, with comfy stools.  You get the feeling of sitting a western style library of cozy, quiet comfort.

This Shanghai gay bar also one of the very few bars in Shanghai to understand and get the music right — both in background style and volume.

Sadly, no English is spoken, yet if you go on a date with a Chinese speaking partner, Q Bar is a great option for a quiet night of chatting in a cozy, friendly environment.

This Q Bar is NOT to be confused with the older gay bar (Toni & Tony’s bar) that used to be on the bund near cool docks, that was famously raided a long time ago.
