Consider AMTRAK train passes vs Greyhound discounts vs rental car vs flight cost to work out most economical for your budget.  Rental cars will give you the most flexibility by far, and allow you to save big $$ by staying outside downtown areas. Also save big by not staying in swanky hotels, but rather cheaper chains with simply clean rooms such as Super8, Travelodge, Fairfield Inn, Microtel, Days Inn, Baymont Inn and Howards Johnson.
