A BEAR FAMILY PLAYGROUND
A local gay bear bar focussed on providing a safe and fun environment for non-pretentious, down-to-earth young & middle-aged bears and young monkeys to drink, play games and enjoy a night away from the other gay spaces. Very friendly staff, cheap drinks in a safe, clean and private environment.
Nestled down a hallway on the 3rd Floor of a building across the street from the Majestic Theatre in Shanghai… it’s an adventure to find it, but a playground to enjoy within. See my photo maps for help the first time.
Lots of dice games and drinking competitions. What is striking is how fabulously normal and un-pretentious the patrons are — pleasantly very different from the tweaked out ridiculous brand wearing, coiffed hair silliness of much of the Shanghai gay scene. Expect real people, enjoy real times together.
Patrons generally arrive and party in friend groups. But if you are lonely, obviously friendly, or have the courage to toast someone, you will quickly be invited into their group.
The bar holds about 100 people comfortably in a combination of raised benches, tables and booths in a well lit space. Various colored lighting effects make for fun selfie photos. Cheap beer (~ RMB 30 for Heineken etc.) shooters and pitchers of mixed drinks to share are the order of the day. Pay by WeChat scanning bar code on the top of each table light.
A remnant of the old Angel days, angel wings not only form a part of their logo, but also represented in neon on the wall. I presume the “A” in their name refers subliminally to their old Angel brand, putting it all together cleverly suggests A+House = Shanghai Angel community new house bar.
Follow their official WeChat account for promotions, often including inexpensive free flow nights.
Recommended for long-term Shanghai locals and Chinese speaking expats, but don’t much English.
