Lyric Opera of Queensland (now Opera Queensland) production of Il Trovatore with music by Giuseppe Verdi and lyrics by Salvadore Cammarano, at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Brisbane in September 1982.

Directed by Anthony Besch; Designed by John Stoddart; Conducted by Thomas Schubach; Stage Managed by Toby Simkin.  Lyric Opera of Queensland Consulting Director: Antony Jeffrey.

STARRING Rita Hunter (Leonora), John Shaw (Count di Luna) and Margreta Elkins (Azucena).

Two enemies, passionate and vengeful; an old gypsy woman with a mysterious bond to them both, and a passionate young woman who must either betray an all-consuming love or face death itself – these are the fiery elements that govern Giuseppe Verdi’s unforgettable masterpiece of obsession, madness and retribution.

I was lucky to repeat this thanks to lovely Rita (and her daughter Mairwyn) for insisting as a contractual consideration that I go down to Sydney to Deputy Stage Manage this again for her Sydney Opera House engagement.
